Not like they used to be, but the home improvement energy efficient tax credits live on. For a primary residence, a homeowner who replaces windows and doors is entitled to a credit up to 10% of the cost for a maximum of $500.00. ÊHowever, the maximum for windows is capped at $200.00. ÊThese credits are in line with what used to be the norm, but in the last 2 years, under the Recovery & Reinvestment Act, homeowners were entitled to claim a credit up to 30% of the material costs for a maximum of $1500.00 credit for these improvements. Again, labor costs are not included in the credit formula. So, do not dismay, merely take advantage of these credits by replacing your older and draftier windows and doors. For more information on how Windows Plus can help you maximize your energy savings, contact Reg or Tom at 703-956-6172. Thank you always for your referrals and continued business.

And, How’s Remodeling Going?

The remodeling forecast for 2011 is on the rise, although homeowners remain cautious about spending, naturally, as they wait to feel good about the market. It is all about “feeling good,” and that’s when consumer confidence rises and the market strengthens.
Likely, only modest gains in the home improvement market will be realized as there clearly is still a stalled housing recovery. This information comes via the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) released by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. The indicator is intended to provide a short-term outlook of the home improvement spending for a quarter and predictors for the remaining three quarters of the year. As reported in the recent edition of “Qualified Remodeler,” the recent volatility in the housing market will be reflected in consumer spending patterns.
What does this mean for you exactly? How do you determine whether this is the right time to improve your home so that you can benefit from the greatest energy efficiency and comfort without impinging upon your retirement or other funding needs?
Windows Plus is here to help you make smart choices in your home. While we appreciate the need to soften expenditures and remain careful about using monies from savings accounts now, rather than guard the monies for future needs, the benefits to replacing old windows and doors, siding and other exterior treatments, may just be greater than the burden of spending.
To ensure that you are taking the right turns for your home at this time, please call on our experts, Reg and Tom, owners of Windows Plus, for some advice that pertains to you and only you and your home. Reg and Tom know their business because it is their business. Call us today at 703-916-8372 and have some peace of mind about your home, your greatest investment during your lifetime. ÊEnjoy the spring and all that it brings!

Low-E Deserves A Mention

Low-E: A Word You See Often in the Window Industry, so here is what it means:
Low-E is the standard term in the window and glass industry that refers to the energy efficiency capabilities of the product. ÊLow-E stands for low emissivity or low emittance. Often used in double and triple glazing units, the low-E coating on glass controls the transfer of radiant heat with insulated glazing thereby reducing energy loss by 30 percent and upwards.
A low-E coating is a virtually invisible layer of metallic oxide that is deposited (generally at the time of manufacturing) on the surface of one or more panes of glass. The low-E serves to reduce the transfer of infrared heat and lowers the U-factor of the window, making the window an effective fighter against heat loss. The U-factor is the rate by which the window (or door, or skylight) conducts a non-solar flow of heat: the lower the value of the U-factor, the greater the energy efficiency of the product. The official U-factor ratings are validated by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) that tests and rates the complete window performance, that is, the frame and spacer material.
Windows can gain and lose heat through a number of sources: through the conduction of heat from the glazing or frame; through heat from the sun that radiates into and out of the house from such elements as furniture, upholstery or people and other objects in a room; and air leakage through and from the windows.Ê There are a number of benefits that low-E glass provides: light can enter the room while providing thermal insulation; the costs to run heating and air conditioning systems is drastically reduced; homeowners can maintain a comfortable living environment without adjusting the thermostat settings; and the possibilities of condensation are greatly decreased. For more information on low-E and other window and door facts, contact Reg or Tom at 703-956-6172, or visit us here and inquire at www.WindowsPls.com. Thank you for your business and keep your questions coming our way.

2011 Energy Tax Credit
December 17, 2010 by admin
Despite earnest efforts by manufacturers and dealers in the window and door replacement industry to support an extension of the 2009-2010 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), 25C residential energy efficiency tax credit, Congress chose to do otherwise. In the 2011 final tax bill, Congress reverted back to the pre-ARRA standard, offering homeowners a 10% tax credit up to $200 for EnergyStar ™ windows.
It appears that this shift falls on the heels of the pursuit to reduce the budget, but leaders in the home improvement industry will continue to make great strides and efforts to promote the passage of the energy tax credit if this topic is revisited in the future. In particular, Window & Door Dealers Alliance (WDDA) is an active party in seeking the increased credit as well as a supporter of other policies that impact the window and door industry. You may follow WDDA’s efforts at: http://www.wddalliance.org/policy.html.
In the meantime, we at Windows Plus encourage homeowners to take steps to improve your home with the most energy efficient products so as to maximize comfort and savings. We are here to help guide you in making these critical decisions. Count on us for support, education and advice when you are interested in replacing your windows, doors and siding.
